The Blackwater Heritage Trail

Looking north along the Blackwater Heritage Trail

The Blackwater Heritage Trail is a rails-to-trails greenway which runs north from Milton, Florida, across a large tract of rolling pine forest. It’s actually two trails, with shared management by the Florida Park Service and the U.S. Navy.

With its smooth road service, twelve foot width, and peaceful vistas, the trail gets a lot of use. There’s a well-kept trailhead with parking, restrooms, and a nearby bicycle shop. Once you clear a few crossroads leaving Milton, it’s a pleasant and relaxing eight mile cruise to Whiting Field before the turnaround on a gently sloping grade home.

My son, James, and I saddled up on a sunny Saturday morning a few weeks ago. It’s not a challenging ride, and that’s the beauty of it.
